Golden Temple photo puts McDonald’s in soup

Mangalore Today News Network

Punjab, June 05, 2015: FAST food giant McDonald’s is facing the ire of the Sikh community worldwide for allegedly using the photograph of the Golden Temple on its menu card in Italy. It has been alleged that these menu card-cum-pamphlets are being placed on the food tray along with nonvegetarian food. And this has angered the Sikhs who say that any misuse of Sikh religious symbols or shrines are nothing but insults to Sikhism.

McDonald’s in Italy, however, has blamed it all on the company’s headquarters in the US.

So far there are no reports of these menu cards being used in India. But they are using these menu card-cum-pamphlets in Italy. Our volunteers contacted McDonald’s in Italy which said that the pamphlets were printed at the brands US headquarters, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak (SGPC) spokesperson Kulwinder Singh told MAIL TODAY . SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said the company has been asked to withdraw the pamphlets immediately. He termed the entire incident as a conspiracy to insult the Sikh religion.

Makkar told MAIL TODAY : "We condemn the action of the Mc Donalds. They have hurt our religious feelings. This is a deep conspiracy against the Sikh religion. They should immediately withdraw the pamphlets from their restaurants with unconditional apology and an assurance that the brand will not insult the Sikh religion in future."

SGPC plans to take up the matter with the Italian embassy in New Delhi and may protest outside the diplomatic precinct, sources said.
