Bengaluru potholes claim fourth victim this month: A 21-year-old woman on scooter

Bengaluru, Oct 11, 2017 : A 21-year-old pillion rider came under a truck in Bengaluru on Wednesday after her sister swerved the two-wheeler to avoid a pothole and both women were flung to the ground, reported news agency PTI.  G Veena, a resident of Kundana in Devanhalli, was riding pillion on the scooter with her sister, G Lakshmi, 24, when the accident took place, according to the police. Veena died on the spot while Lakshmi, who sustained serious injuries, is admitted to a nearby hospital. Police have registered a case against the truck driver, who is absconding.

 

Residents staged a protest today by blocking the road, in protest of the conditions of the roads. According to PTI,  four people have been killed this month in accidents caused by the condition of Bengaluru roads. On Monday, a woman was run over by a truck while riding pillion with her nephew, who tried negotiating a pothole near Nayandahalli. Around a week ago, an elderly couple was killed after a bus ran over them on Mysuru road flyover. They were trying to avoid a pothole too.

The government has drawn flak for the condition of the roads in the city. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has attributed the potholes to torrential rains received in the city, and has promised to fix them within a fortnight.

Back in 2015, a 36-year-old visual artist planted a life-sized crocodile in a 12-feet long pothole in north Bengaluru out of frustration with civic authorities. He had hoped the move to turn the pothole into an artificial crocodile pond would force authorities to take action.
