World’s oldest wombat becomes internet sensation after celebrating 29th birthday

Aug 30, 2014: Patrick, from Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria, is believed to be the oldest and biggest wombat in the world but has never had a partner

 

This is the moment the world’s oldest wombat became an internet sensation after celebrating his 29th birthday.

The massive marsupial tips the scales at a whopping 39kg.

 

He lives at Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria and is 15 years older than any other wombat in captivity.

The wombat was taken in by the zoo as a baby after his mum was killed in a car accident. He has been released three times but doesn’t have the instincts to survive in the wild.

Patrick, who is thought to also be the biggest wombat in the world, won over Facebook fans with over 200,000 likes.

 

 

So the friendly animal spends his days being carted around in a wheelbarrow, eating carrots and posing with tourists.

Julia Leonard, curator at the park, said: "He is one of our favourites at the park and everyone has been celebrating his birthday. He’s really been lapping it up."

Despite his age, Patrick has never fathered any babies or even had a partner.
