There is nothing like a good horror story to send shivers down your spine. The only thing that beats it is being in an actual haunted location.

Now, if you have the guts, you can actually own an island and not just any island, the "world’s most haunted island" at that. Meet Poveglia, off the coast of Italy, which has just been put on the auctioning table for builders by the Italian government.

This is the same island where thousands checked in, but never checked out.

The island has earned itself such a reputation that it has spawned off a number of sobriquets including, "the island of madness", "Hell" and "the most haunted place on Earth".

If you thought this was just hype, here’s reason to believe why it can vie for the title of being the most haunted island on Earth: In the late 19th century, Poveglia was a checkpoint for ships heading to Venice. When a pair of ships carrying plague victims arrived hre in 1793, the authorities sealed off the island and turned it into a quarantine zone for people with infectious diseases. It soon became a dumping ground for those Europeans who were dying of the plague. Today, rumours have it that the ghosts of the plagued still haunt the island.

However, in 1922, things seemed to look up when a hospital for the elderly was set up there. But rumour spread fast that it was a cover for a mental institution and word about botched lobotomies began doing the rounds.

The blog Late at Night lists another legend: "Another tale surrounds a building raised in 1922 on the island, which was used for various purposes, including a mental hospital. The legend states that a particular mental health doctor tortured and butchered many of the patients, before going "mad" and jumping to his death from the bell tower. According to that same legend, he survived the fall, but was ’strangled by a mist that came up from the ground’. Its ruins remain to this day."

Such is the legend of this island that now there’s a local saying that "When an evil man dies, he wakes up in Poveglia".

It is said that 50 per cent of the island’s soil is not sand but human ashes.

Don’t want to get up close, enjoy the island’s beauty from the comfort of your room:
