The apple with a split personality: Mum finds fruit half red and half green marked by an almost perf

A mum was surprised to find a half red and half green apple marked by a virtually perfect line down the middle in a bag of eight she bought from Asda.

Experts say the natural phenomenon may be the result of a random genetic mutation.

Mother of two Donna Wood, 51, bought the Cripps Pink apples in a bag from her local Asda store. She kept the mutant apple in her fridge and it has become quite a talking point among friends.

The best of both worlds: A half red/ half green apple was found in a bag of eight, bought from ASDA

Mrs Wood, of Wimborne, Dorest, said: ‘The odd thing was that it was the only one like it in the bag of eight other apples. All the other ones looked perfectly normal

‘It was as if two different coloured apples had been cut in half and then stuck back together by somebody,’ she added.

Experts say the chances of a perfectly split, by colour, apple of this kind is a million to one chance. Mutations can sometimes be triggered by cold weather, temperature fluctuations or insect damage.

The Cripps Pink variety of apple was originally bred by John Cripps at the Western Australia Department of Agriculture by crossing the Australian apple Lady Williams with a Golden Delicious in order to combine the best features of both apples. The apple is both sweet and crisp.
