It might be more suited to a fringe show, but London’s Saatchi Gallery is showcasing a new style of cutting-edge art - an installation made from human HAIR.

United Nations: Man And Space appears to have more to do with a hairdresser’s salon than an artist’s salon as it assembles flags from around the world made from little more than locks of hair held together with glue.

It has been created by the Shanghai-born but US-based artist Wenda Gu - also known as Gu Wenda - and features in a new exhibition Post Pop: East Meets West.

The display features 250 works and looks at the impact of the Pop Art movement globally, with many artists from the former Soviet Union, China and Taiwan among those represented, along with figures from the UK and US.

They also include Hoover Breakdown by Bill Woodrow, which features a vacuum cleaner broken into its constituent parts on the gallery floor, and appearing to be on the verge of being sucked up by another appliance.

Other works mix brand names with propaganda-style images.

Among the notable names to figure in the list of 110 artists on display are Ai Weiwei, Julian Opie, Marc Quinn, Yinka Shonibare, Rachel Whiteread, Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman.

The exhibition opens tomorrow at the gallery in London’s King’s Road and continues until February 23.
