Sachin Tendulkar, a name synonymous with world records, was born in Mumbai on April 24, 1973 in a Rajapur Saraswat Brahmin’s family. His father, the late Ramesh Tendulkar, was a literary Marathi figure while, his mother Rajni Tendulkar is a homemaker and has also worked with LIC. Sachin was named after legendary film music composer Sachin Dev Burman, as he was very much fond of music composed by SD Burman. He has two brothers, Ajit and Nitin and one sister Savita.
It was his elder brother Ajit Tendulkar, who first spotted cricketing talent in Sachin. Ajit was interested in cricket himself and played the sport during his school and college days. He later left playing cricket, to mentor his younger brother’s cricket career.
Ajit Tendulkar has written a book on the life and times of Sachin Tendulkar, titled “The Making of a cricketer”. During Sachin’s formative years, it was Ajit who accompanied him during his cricketing tours within and out of the country, guiding him at each and every step. At present, he looks after Sachin’s diverse endorsements and business interests.
The cricketer says, “Ajit has always been my guiding light in cricket. He was the one who spotted my natural ability and honed that. With his help and coaching I have developed into the cricketer that I am. I am still improving and it is still Ajit that I look to for that help."
Sachin is happily married to a paediatrician, Dr Anjali and has two children-son Arjun and daughter Sarah. Anjali belongs to an industrialist family and her father Anand Mehta, is a reputed industrialist from Gujarat. At present she is working with JJ Hospital in Mumbai.
