May 08, 2015: Specialist divers investigating reports of human remains found in a snorkeling hot spot were stunned to find two skeletons ’having a tea party’.

A horrified swimmer called police on Monday at around 10am after spotting skulls and bones near to the bottom of the lake.

Police officers called in the fire brigade, who sent one of their diving team, firefighter Eric Foerstner, down to investigate.

Make no bones about it: Firefighters sent a diver down to investigate

But when he took their camera down to record the remains, found in Cienega Springs, Colorado, he was completely stunned.

Two bodies were sat upright, in plastic garden chairs and appeared to be having a ’tea party’.

One of them was holding a sign that read: "Bernie livin’ the dream in the river," which appears to be a nod to the 1989 film Weekend at Bernie’s.

And upon closer inspection, he noticed the skeletons were plastic fakes.

He told ABC News: "I don’t think they were trying to set up anything to scare anyone. I think they were gonna try to be funny."

A La Paz County Sherrif spokesperson said: "On May 4, 2015, at approximately 10:00 hours, the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of Cienega Springs boat launch in regards to a report of found human remains.

Fraud: Thankfully both skeletons were plastic

"The reporting person stated that he/she was out snorkeling when they noticed skeletal remains at the bottom of the river.

"Sheriff’s Office personnel met with members of the Buckskin Fire Department who sent one of their divers down to investigate.

"The diver took an underwater camera and video recorded the footage as he saw it.

"When Firefighter Foerstner located the alleged remains, he found it to be an underwater tea-party with two fake skeletons sitting in lawn chairs. See video-footage.

"Although the call itself was resource intensive, both the Sheriff’s Office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren’t real and thanked the reporting party for making the call."
