Orangutan learns to dress herself in wildlife ranger’s T-shirt

Asia, May 21, 2014:  A fashion forward orangutan showed that even a monkey can model when she got her hands on a park ranger’s t-shirt.

Clearly in the know of how good gingers look in blue, the female orangutan in Tanjung Putting National Park in Borneo, put the shirt on - after a small struggle.

The ape and her baby had been hunting for food at the park rangers’ hut, but upon discovering that the keepers were out for the day, they took the opportunity to raid their closet.

On trend: Like the true fashion forward simian she is, the orangutan pops her collar while her baby climbs in the background

At first, it was her baby that became interested in the bright blue polo, but mother orangutan soon took over.

After managing to put the t-shirt on - the right way and all - the clever simian then attempted to work out the purpose of wellies, before disappearing into the jungle.
 

The adorable moment was captured by wildlife photographer, David Jenkins, 41.

‘I have no idea how the orangutan acquired this skill but it was probably from observing the park rangers in the morning as they get dressed.’

Accessorizing: Going for the off-the-shoulder look, the orangutan decides to complete her outfit with some wellies

Hipster ape: However, the concept of wellies appeared too mainstream for this orangutan, and she put it on her hand instead

Mr Jenkins added: ‘Orangutans are very intelligent, curious and playful animals and this is a great example of how they have an incredible ability to learn new skills.

‘Most of the animals at the national park are wild but some are introduced after being rescued from the illegal pet trade when their mothers died.

‘They are free to live a wild life now but sometimes they will visit the ranger stations for some bananas.

‘I was amazed when I saw the orangutan put on the shirt, my initial reaction was utter disbelief and then a lot of laughter, they really are special creatures.’
