These incredible pictures show how well preserved the dog known as Stuckie is, who was found in 1980 by loggers from the Kraft Corporation.

It is thought Stuckie became trapped around 1960 after he ran into a hole at the bottom of the tree, before climbing 28 feet up chasing a small animal.

But as the dog climbed further the tree narrowed and Stuckie became stuck. Unable to escape or be rescued he starved to death in the chestnut oak.

But it wasn’t until 1980 that he was rescued, according to Newsweek. Loggers donated the tree to museum Southern Forest World instead of pulping it and Stuckie became a star attraction.

Bertha Sue Dixon, who runs the museum, told Newsweek: ‘He’s a hunting dog, so we assumed that he was chasing something in the tree.’

It is believed that tannin found in the chestnut oat helped preserve the dog, because it is a natural dessicant which absorbs moisture.

Tannin is used to tan animal pelts and prevent decay, and helps create a low moisture environment preventing decay.

Along with this air would have blown upward through the tree like a chimney, causing the dead scent of the animal to be carried away.

Dixon added: ‘Anything that would eat dead flesh would never know he was in the tree.’
