KALABURAGI, May 17, 2017: It was an occasion to remember at Benakanahalli in Sedam taluk. An overjoyed man organised a procession to celebrate the ‘remarkable’ success of his son. The son’s achievement: 51 per cent marks in SSLC, which was ‘beyond expectations’. Devendrappa Gummari spent Rs 20,000 for the celebrations that included DJ sound system for the procession.

It all started with the return of the young man, Arjun, to his village on Monday after checking his results at a residential school at Gurmitkal in Yagir district where he studied SSLC.

Gummari received his successful son at the local Hanuman temple and took him home in a procession. He distributed 20 kg sweets to villagers on the way.

Gummari’s joy had a reason. He and his wife never expected their son to pass SSLC. But his passing the exam, that too in the first attempt, far exceeded their expectations.

With hundreds of students scoring over 95 per cent in SSLC and some of them securing an eye popping 100 per cent, Arjun’s score of 51 per cent may not look too impressive. But for the couple who own six acres of land and who once used to work as agriculture labourers, their son’s ‘feat’ is a milestone for the family. Arjun is the first person in the family to pass SSLC.

Devendrappa, who studied upto fourth standard understands the importance of education. He says he will educate his two other children too. On his part, Arjun wants to study ITI and get a job in a cement factory which is expected to come up at the village.
