Atholi, Kerala, Feb 26: Manikyam was reared by an Indian farmer the same way as his other cows - but hasn’t made it past 2ft. This mini-mooer is officially the world’s tiniest cow.

The six-year-old cow, known as Manikyam, was confirmed as the world’s shortest last year by the Guinness World Records team.

Record-breaker: Tiny Manikyam with its owner

Standing at just 61.5cm tall, Manikyam smashed the previous record of 69.07cm.

She lives in Atholi in the south, Kasargod, state of Kerala with her owner, a farmer and environmentalist called NV Balakrishnan, who got her as a new-born calf.

Despite feeding her just like all the other cows on his farm, Manikyam never grew higher than two feet tall.

"I got this cow five years ago," NV Balakrishnan says in this video.

"Right then, I felt her uniqueness. I reared her with special care.

"This cow is like a family member. She is with us with all times. It is a very important and very intelligent cow."

Dr Priya Nair, a vet, said: "I have never come across such a situation because this is the rarest animal in the world. It is only some 61cm in height."

NV Balakrishnan’s son, Akshay Nambukudy, says that Manikyam is now something of a local celebrity, and is regularly stopped for pictures.
