The iconic leader’s sandals will go under the hammer in Shropshire on May 21

They’re battered and threadbare - but a pair of old sandals are expected tmo fetch a fortune at auction next week, the Sunday People reports .

For these well-worn flip-flops, (a comfy size eight) used to belong to Gandhi. He famously walked everywhere in them.

Loincloth, wooden staff and flip-flops. . .they made up the image of a simple man who shunned material things.

So he would be amazed to hear they are worth at least £15,000 today.

That’s the value of celebrity. All kinds of cast-offs from the famous can start a clamour of bids when they go on sale.

"It’s true that Gandhi’s sandals are not in the best condition, but that doesn’t matter to serious collectors," says Richard Westwood-Brookes, from auctioneers Mullock’s, who will be selling them in Ludlow, Shropshire, on May 21. They really are iconic."

Rather than drop them in the bin, Gandhi gave away his old sandals to a friend in 1924.
