March 05, 2021:      Business tycoon Anand Mahindra is quite a regular on Twitter. He more than often takes to the microblogging site to share inspiring stories, funny incidents, unusual and innovative things that catch his attention. Recently, he shared a picture of an elephant who has been made to wear clothes that look like a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Giving it a witty tone he wrote, ‘Ele-Pant’ instead of an elephant. Though he has shared it as a rare sight, some people have raised questions around animal cruelty in the comments of his post. Many people have opined that doing such a thing to an animal is cruel as it makes them uncomfortable. While others also said that such an act amounted to enslaving them and putting them in captivity.

A person who was strongly against this, in a part of his comment, said, “Elephants are sentient beings that belong in the wild with their kind, not be torn apart from their families & held captive in circuses or zoos.” A different user shed light upon how those who use an elephant to attract tourist torture them terribly. He added that they often starve and injure them during the training process. He went on to mention how elephants, particularly in Asia, are crushed to an extent where they lose their spirit of life and at times the process of doing this absolutely inhumane.

A bunch of people have also mentioned that just because such a thing is happening in India, concerns are being raised. They mentioned that when something similar happens in the west, Indians are first to call it ‘cute’, ‘adorable’ etc. Many also said that Indians are not capable of harming elephants whether they be wild or domesticated.

A person who thought that the photo does show the ‘Incredible India’ side, wrote, “Thanks for the Share! Truly Incredible India. Whatever the wildlife enthusiasts say….India & Indian would never harm any elephant be it domesticated or in forest.” Another one added, “Very creative idea and respectful to watch elegant walking.”
