Mr Furqan, from Lucknow – a city in northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh, was declared dead on Monday last week with the family holding a ceremony in preparation for his burial, the Hindustan Times reported.

But during the procession, family members saw movements in Mr Furgan’s limbs and promptly rushed him to hospital.

There he was declared very much alive and placed on ventilation support, but remained in a critical condition.

“Devastated, we were preparing for the burial when some of us saw movement in his limbs,” his brother, Mohammad Irfan, said.

“We immediately took Furqan to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where the doctors said he was alive and have put him on ventilator support.”

Mr Irfan claimed the family had initially paid the private hospital AU$14,314 for his brother’s treatment.

But when the family told staff they had run out of money, they were coincidentally told Mr Furgan had died.

The city’s chief medical officer, Narendra Agarwal, said the matter would be the subject of a thorough investigation.

“The patient is in critical condition but definitely not brain dead. He has pulse, blood pressure and his reflexes are working,” Mr Agarwal said.
