Yakshagana Academy to confer awards on 20 artistes

Mangalore, March18: The Yakshagana Bayalata Academy of Karnataka has selected 20 artistes for its honorary awards of 2008 and 2009. The awards ceremony will be held at Dharmasthala on March 21, said Kumble Sundar Rao, the president of the academy. The awards will be given away by Dharmasthala Dharmadikari D Veerendra Heggade.

Mr. Rao informed press people during a press meet on Wednesday that each artiste will receive a cash reward of Rs 10,000, a shawl, a citation, and a memento. He said that artistes from different Yakshagana schools such as Badagu Thittu, Tenku Thittu, Sannata, Badabadagu, Doddata, Krishna Parijatha, Ghattada Kore, Radhanata, and Bayalata have been selected for this award. 

 

H Subbanna Bhat, Molahalli Heriya Naika, Hosahitlu Mahalinga Bhat, K Pakeera of Gerukatte, Vidwan Ka Na Dasachar, Karki Narayana Hasyagara, Vandse Narayana Ganiga, Ramayya Rai of Mumbai, Madevayya Nooli, and Siddanna Channappa Sarasambi have been selected to receive the 2008 awards. 

 

Kadandelu Purushottama Bhat, Mukhyaprana Kinnigoli, M K Ramesh Acharya, Khader Sab, Kashibayi Dadanatti, Peruvodi Narayana Bhat, Sheenappa Rai Sampaje, Matyadi Narasimha Shetty, and K B Jayachandra Raja Arasu have been chosen for the 2009 awards. 

 

These are the first awards to be conferred by this academy, which was formed by combining Yakshagana Academy and Karnataka Janapada in 2008. Since it was brand new and had some administrative issues to resolve, the academy was not able to confer any honorary awards in 2008. For these reasons, the academy will be conferring the awards for 2008 and 2009 on Sunday. 

 

Mr. Rao also informed that the government has agreed to institute an award in honor of the late Parthi Subba, who is popularly known as the father of Yakshagana. This award will include a cheque for Rs 1 lakh. 

 

Mr. Rao said that the students of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodubidri, will stage a Yakshagana programme titled “Sudharshana Vijaya.” This will be followed by another Yakshagana programme titled “Dharmangada Digvijaya” by the artistes of Poornachandra Yakshagana Mandali.
