Violence, discrimination against women must be resisted: Dr Madhavi

Udupi, Jan 8, 2017: Delivering the presidential address at the Sammelana in Udupi town on Jan 7, Saturday,President of Udupi Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelana Dr Madhavi Bhandari said the increase in violence against women is to be resisted. She added that a section of men who cannot tolerate the success and better conditions of women indulge in heinous crimes. She said it is high time women themselves should involve in self-defence.

She called upon women to utilise the laws for their own safety and empower themselves through legal and constitutional support.

Dr. Madhavi said equality among men and women is based on trust and respect to each other and not on the differentiation between genders. She said the increasing female foeticide shows the mindset of the society even in the modern era. In Karnataka, there are 943 women for every 1000 men and the men-women ration in the country is 1000:918. Social evils like dowry harassment and domestic violence continues to exist. Women should raise voice against them and protest against discrimination. The stakeholders of society to uphold equality as both men and women are equal, she said.

Dr. Madhavi expressed concern over decreasing morality and values in the society. A child, who has not studied mother tongue, will not be able to understand the intricacies of traditional values and morality, she observed. The love for English medium of instruction has resulted in closing down of Kannada medium schools, she regretted.

Speaking after inaugurating the Sammelana, poet Dundiraj said literary conventions are essential to conserve the language and literature.

Local talents should be recognised and promoted in the literary meets. Researchers should promote the study of limericks, and local culture it was exhorted.
