Ullal continues to be beaten, no government relief

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 18: The houses along the coast of Kadapuram, Ullal continued to be lashed by wind, rain, and waves for the fourth day on Thursday. The hapless villagers are still waiting for government relief. Rocks carried by the huge waves have smashed the walls of houses along the shore for nearly 1km.

The house of U. M. Aliabba (71) came crashing down after the waves pounded on it for days. Aliabba’s large family is now dependent on friends and relatives for shelter. People have deserted several flooded houses along the coast. Fisherman Hadil said that families cannot sleep at night because of the persistent sound of waves and rocks crashing into their houses. He complained that politicians are least bothered about their plight. The roofs of some houses have blown away, leaving the people exposed to the harsh weather.

Azmal, a student, said that they are getting no compensation, just waves. Shopkeeper Mohammed Ismail said that the usual compensation of Rs 500 - Rs 800 is not sufficient to rebuild the damaged houses. Electric power was restored on Wednesday, but a few houses still do not have power.

MLA U. T. Khader said that the people were asked to submit applications to relocate their houses, but none of them had responded. He said that the people will be compensated, but it will take time.

A recent government press release stated that encroachments blocking storm water drains in Padil, Adyar, Kannur, and Ujjodi, where people complained of artificial flooding, have been removed.
