Udupi DC  Priyanka Mary Francis has said that a programme of promoting integrated agriculture with the help of departments of agriculture and horticulture titled “Departments to the doorsteps of farmers” ( Ilakhegala Nadige Raitara Mane Bagilige ) will be launched in the district on June 12.

DC Francis directed the officials of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and other related departments to give extensive knowledge of all government programmes to the farmers in villages during the campaign.  They should also inform the farmers on techniques of improving productivity and use of new technology, she said, adding that they should organise exhibitions related to agriculture and conduct interaction of farmers with agricultural scientists.

Under this agriculture promotion programme, two villages will be adopted and efforts will be made to recharge groundwater, promote pipe compost and agricultural activities, and dig percolation pits there.  Ponds and lakes in all GPs will be rejuvenated under the Kere Sanjeevini and Bhoo Samrudhi schemes.

Weekly organic market : DC Francis said that the administration will be holding a weekly organic market — Savayava Santhe— on the premises of the Department of Horticulture at Doddanagudde here on Sundays from June. Only registered organic farmers will be able to sell their produce at this market. Even organic farmers from other districts will be encouraged to sell their produce at the weekly market here. If there was more demand for organic vegetables and fruits, this market can be held twice a week.

Chandrashekhar Nayak, Joint Director of Agriculture, Hanumanthappa, Research Director of Farm Science Centre, Devadas Hebbar, President of District Organic Farmers Federation, and other departmental heads participated.
