Udupi: Commercial tax officer arrested for accepting bribe

Udupi, June 11: A commercial Tax officer from Udupi was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police, while accepting bribe of Rs. 3,000 from a pigmy collector at Udupi on Friday, June 11 at 2.00 pm.


According to Lokayukta police, Prabhakar, a pigmy collector of Canara Bank, kalianpur branch, has approached Cheluvaraj, a commercial tax officer serving at Udupi to solve his professional tax issue. After hearing his plight, officer has demanded Rs 8000 as bribe. After a negotiation, tax officer has reduced the bribe amount from Rs. 8000 to 3,000. He has also mentioned a place near Hotel Kidiyoor on NH 17 as a convenient spot to exchange the money. But, before meeting tax officer Cheluvaraj, Prabhakar had informed about bribe with Udupi Lokayuktha police.


Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Lokayukta, led by Dr Prabhdev Mane, Superintendent of police Lokayuktha, have arrested Cheluvaraj from a spot near Hotel kediyoor and taken into custody for further investigation.


Lokayuktha Sub-inspector Dinesh Kumar, police personnel Divakar Suvarna, Divakar Sharma, Ramachandra Bhat, Sridhar, Umesh, Ashok, Santhosh and Laxmidar Seti were  also present in the searching operation.
