Tulu in rural areas to be developed

Mangaluru, Sep 21,2017:  The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy will focus on development of Tulu in rural areas where it will hold literary and cultural programmes in the next three years, said academy president A.C. Bhandary.

During a meet-the-press programme on Tuesday, Mr. Bhandary said that it was the need to build the language in the rural area than in the urban area. The academy will hold cultural and literary activities and involve Tulu teachers and students learning Tulu in it. Eight subcommittees have been formed to carry out different cultural and literary activities, he said.

Mr. Bhandary said that since taking over as president of the academy, he has spoken to Tulu writers and also the former presidents of the academy on the measures necessary for widening the reach of Tulu. He has also spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about inclusion of Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Mr. Bhandary said that 1,647 students are studying Tulu as third language between Classes 6 and 10 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
