Mangalore, Sep 21,2014:    Speaking at ‘Paddhano Parapu- Polabu,’ a programme organised by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at the Academy Chavadi here on September 20,  Mangalore University Yakshagana Study Centre Research Officer Dr Rajashri.

The scholar stated, whoever is interested in Tulu Paddhanas should understand the basic intentions behind those narrations. Paddhanas not only explain the geographical area, language and farming culture of Tulunad, they are like history of people who had suffered harassment in a period of time.   She said, It is heard "Work is worship" but we know  that for Tuluvas, paddy farming was just like worship of God for centuries. During different steps of paddy cultivation, farm women used to share their happiness and woes through Paddhanas. They sang the responsibilities of women and irresponsibility of men through Kabithas, a form in Paddhana. All the aspects of life are mentioned in  artistic form.

People were not educated in advanced views but they developed those lines using their experience and creativity and gave a cultural touch to it. The explanation about the creation of globe in Koti- Chennai Paddhana is a very good example, she said. Sandhi, Nalike are also a part of Paddhana, just named according to the situation they were being used. Anyhow, Paddhnas wish a peaceful life for all, which has a great humanitarian value, Dr Rajashri added.
