Trial for waste segregation at source in Udupi city soon

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Sep 3,2015 :  CMC -  Udupi City Municipal Council will be implementing its ambitious waste segregation at source project in select 45 multi-storied residential apartments in the city soon.   Presently, all the waste from households is being collected by self help groups (SHGs) in most parts of the city, barring the outskirts and remote areas. But there has been no waste segregation at source.

Most houses put their waste – both wet and dry – in bags outside their houses. These are taken away by the SHG members in a truck and disposed of at the Solid Waste Management Plant at Alevoor.  There are a total of 32,000 households in Udupi district, including nearly 300 residential apartments. The CMC’s plan is to target residential apartments for its waste segregation at source project.

In the first phase, the CMC plans to implement this waste segregation in 45 residential apartments which come under the Sidhinagara Stree Shakti SHG.

Apartments for this project are selected  because they have residential associations or societies, which are more receptive. Since the flats are located in a single building, it is easier to implement this project than among scattered single houses  said CMC Environment Engineer.

Under this segregation of waste at source project, all the flat owners in these apartments would be told to separate waste into three categories – wet, dry and hazardous.

The wet waste would basically be kitchen waste. The dry waste would include paper and plastic materials. The hazardous waste would include liquid mosquito destroyers, electronic waste, chemical materials, sanitary pads, tube lights, CFL and LED lights.

To make this project a success, the CMC has decided to train the members of the SHGs, who are collecting garbage, about the three-fold segregation of waste at source.   The leaders or members of the SHGs would be able to go to the residential apartments and explain them about the advantages of waste segregation at source.

The apartments that have been chosen for the project are located in the Old Udupi town limits and not far from one another. Plan is to extend this project to the remaining 250 residential apartments. Then to target the individuals houses.
