Total Oil India Ltd. commissions berth no. 12 at NMPT

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan, 26: Total Oil India Ltd commissioned berth no. 12, its second LPG berth at New Mangalore Port, on Monday. Inaugurating Total Oil India Limited’s LPG unloading facilities at berth no. 12, Tamilvanan, the chairman of the New Mangalore Port, said that berth no. 12 and 9 will be used alternatively as LGP unloading facilities during emergencies.

Tamilvanan said Total Oil India Limited and HPCL handles LPG at the Mangalore Port. Although HPCL handles 20,000 tonnes of LPG at a time from a vessel, the discharge per day was only 5,000 tonnes. Therefore, Total Oil India Ltd. vessels have to wait nearly 5 days for unloading.

He said that, since the occupancy of berth no. 12 was only 30 percent, NMPT decided to permit Total India Ltd to commission its second LPG berth. In fact, NMPT has also received permission from Control of Explosives to set up the LPG berth. Berth no. 12 has the capacity to handle large vessels.

Tamilvanan said that HPCL will also establish its unloading facility at berth no. 12 soon. Since the capacity of berth no. 12 is 3.8 million tones, it can handle edible oil, furnace oil, and Naptha, besides LPG.

Prakash Jonnalagadda, the CEO of Total Oil India Limited, said that the presence of an alternative berth for LPG handling at the New Mangalore Port will eliminate the possibilities of Total Oil India ships having to wait for a long time for unloading. This, in turn, will reduce outgo of precious foreign exchange.

He also said, in response to a query, that Total Oil India Ltd. plans to establish stations at Kolar and Belgaum too.
