Teachers to boycott SSLC evaluation

Teachers to boycott SSLC evaluation

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 14: The SSLC evaluation is scheduled to commence on April 15 at centres all over Karnataka. However, the Karnataka State High School Teachers’ Association has called for a boycott of the evaluation.

The association claims that a boycott is necessary because of the government’s failure to satisfy its demands. It accuses the government of not paying teachers their daily allowance, Kannada qualification increments, and enhanced evaluation allowance. The association also alleges that the government has not yet set right pay anomalies.

The association had sent a delegation to Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, the education minister, last September and he had promised to meet all the 19 pending demands of the teachers. But the minister had failed to keep his promises. The association therefore feels that boycotting the SSLC evaluation is the only way to pressurize the government to meet its demands.

The teachers are still receiving evaluation rates fixed several years ago. Demands placed on wage parity in 1996 are still being ignored. The government has not yet sanctioned Kannada increments in spite of court orders. The teachers expressed their unhappiness over the government’s delay in paying teachers their daily allowance.

The Central Committee has taken the decision that the officials at the district level will present themselves at the appointed time at the SSLC evaluation centres on April 15 and then suspend the evaluation. During a state-level preliminary meeting held recently, the teachers made a firm decision not to succumb to threats of disciplinary action from the government and not to conduct the evaluation until instructed by the office bearers at the state level.
