Tahsildar urges SC/ST beneficiaries not to misuse allotted land

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 3, 2012 : Speaking at a taluk-level SC/ST grievance meeting held in Mangalore on Wednesday, Ravichandra Nayak, the tahsildar of Mangalore, said that land allotted for landless SC/ST families must not be misused.

Stating that the title deeds of those who have claimed this land illegally will be cancelled, he said that this process has already begun. He further said that in Kannur, 272 title deeds have already been distributed but the beneficiaries have still not constructed houses on them even two years after receiving the site.

The tahsildar said that it has been brought to his notice that beneficiaries are selling the land, which is illegal, adding that RTC will not be given to those who purchase such land.

When participants raised the issue of celebrating Ambedkar Jayanthi in schools, the education department officials said that they had directed schools to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanthi and as far as they knew, most schools had celebrated the event. The complainants alleged that many government schools have not celebrated Ambedkar Jayanthi on April 14, adding that, although it is a government holiday, several officials have not participated in the official celebrations held in Town Hall.

Ramesh Kotian, a Dalit leader, complained that although SC/ST students ought to be given CET fee concession, several colleges have collected fees from them, creating problems for economically backward Dalit students. In response, the tahsildar directed the department of social welfare to instruct the Mangalore University to issue a circular to all colleges informing them that it is illegal to collect CET fees from SC/ST students.

A number of issues such as MGNREGS, social welfare hostels, and many others were discussed during the meeting.
