Students demand investigation of Soumya’s death

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, January 12: Students’ organizations staged a protest in the premises of the Wenlock Hospital Morgue, demanding immediate investigation of Soumya’s mysterious death at South Africa.

The body of Soumya, who reportedly shot herself dead in Ghana, South Africa, had been taken to the Wenlock Hospital Morgue for post mortem. Although the body reached the morgue at 9 a.m., the post mortem was done only at 1 p.m. after the Tahsildar arrived on the scene.

While she was yet a Final BA student in Besant College, Soumya was married to Prem Kishan of Kodikal on Dec 31, 2008. Later, Prem Kishan went to South Africa and Soumya joined him on a visiting visa on Aug 21, 2009. On Dec 28, 2009, she died mysteriously. Her body reached Bangalore on Saturday and  Mangalore on Sunday. The family had intended to cremate her in Bangalore, but owing to the activities of certain associations, her body was brought to Mangalore.

Her parents, classmates, a number of students, and leaders of students’ unions had assembled near the morgue premises. All Students’ Union of Mangalore University has urged the DC and the police commissioner to find out the truth regarding her death.

When Soumya was staying at her in-law’s house in Kodikal, she was harassed for dowry. The elders had tried to solve the problem without much success. Everybody associated with Soumya believe that she has been murdered for additional dowry. Student’s organizations, therefore, have urged the authorities concerned to submit an application to the South African Embassy.
