Mangalore, June 9: Coming together to discuss burning issues and make positive change happen in our city, a group of high schools students have mooted the Student Action Movement (SAM) at the Chinmaya School on June 5. Coinciding the inauguration of this student platform with World Environment Day, students from different schools in the city joined together to make paper bags and took out an awareness march along the main roads in the city to converge at the Kadri market, distributing and convincing the shopkeepers and consumers to use alternatives to plastics.

The core group of the Student Action Movement, all part of the Centre for Integrated Learning, aim to be a forum for high school students to voice their opinions and concerns.SAM will be a platform to connect with youth of similar interests and build camaraderie amongst students from different backgrounds, while infusing in them a spirit of patriotism and responsibility towards society.


The entire group will meet once in three months, and the core group meets once in a month to chalk out programs. Members shall consist of high school students (7th-10th) from schools all over the city.


The portfolios in the elected executive board for the year of its inception include:
President – Akanksha (VII Std, St Theresa School) ; Vice President (Events)- Aditya Hegde (X Std, Cascia High School) ; Vice President (Publicity) – Hrishikesh Shetty (IX Std, Sri Ramakrishna School), Secretary  - Gautami Rao (IX Std, Sharada Vidyalaya), Chief Editor – Ruth Dsilva(IX Std, St. Theresa School).


These spirited youngsters have chalked out a plan of action that includes taking up projects that beautify the city, facilitate communal harmony and bring about environmental awareness among the citizens of Mangalore. They also have a special focus on human rights and child rights, and they aim to get their message across through activities like meeting decision-makers, organizing rallies and organizing debates and competitions.
