St Aloysius PG students will not receive degrees

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Apr 4: The Mangalore University has decided that the 2007 - 08 batch of postgraduate students of St Aloysius College, an autonomous institution affiliated to the Mangalore University, which passed out in 2008 - 09, will not receive their degrees at the 28th convocation.

The Syndicate had earlier decided not to award degrees to this batch till the college remitted the registration fee of Rs 35.01 lakh, which was due to it. The college refused to pay and also challenged the Mangalore University’s decision in the High Court of Karnataka.

Vice Chancellor T C Shivashankar Murthy informed journalists during a press conference held on Saturday that the court had passed an interim order on April 1 on a writ petition filed by the college.

The interim order states: “If any student of St. Aloysius College is eligible to receive any medal or award from the university in the ensuing convocation, such student shall be admitted to the convocation without insisting on payment of registration fee. And such admission and grant of award or medal shall remain subject to a final decision on the writ petition.”

The vice chancellor said that, upon verification, the university found that no student was eligible to receive any medal or award at the 28th convocation. Since the university found that “no student of St Aloysius College is eligible to receive any award or medal from the university during the convocation, the university will not award degrees to the students of that batch,” said the vice chancellor.
