Sixth Kala Nidhi Award conferred on Damodar Acharya

damodarMangalore, March 13: Damodar L Acharya, accomplished artist and drawing teacher at Nittoor High School, has been selected by the Kaa Vaa Acharya Vidhyarthi Trust of Shirva for the sixth Kala Nidhi Award, which will be conferred at Nittoor High School on March 13, Saturday. The Kaa Vaa Acharya Trust honors artists from DK, Kasargod, and Udupi.  



Jagjeevandas Shetty, the chairman of the Nittoor High School Managing Committee, will preside over the programme. K Subramanya Bhat, the headmaster of Nittoor High School, and Chandrakanth S, the managing director of Kaa Vaa Acharya Trust will also participate in the programme. An exhibition of the works of Damodar Acharya and a live demonstration of his glass paintings will be held on the occasion.

 

Acharya, a multi-faceted personality, has been a dedicated teacher of art for many years. He had learned art from his teacher, G R Upadyaya. Acharya was born in a family of sculptors. He says that his family was so poor that he could not continue his studies after Class V. However, Damodar Acharya managed to complete his B Com at Poornaprajna Evening College and received his qualification in art at the Fine Arts Institute in Udupi.  



Damodar is an expert in water painting, fine arts, and oil painting. He has experimented with all forms of art, including traditional art, landscapes, and modern art. He mythological water color paintings on post cards are amazing. He has painted a series of paintings on Bhoota Kola and Yakshagana. He is adept at glass painting as well as glass printing. The education department has identified his talent in paper craft.  



Damodar Acharya has to his credit 4 solo art exhibitions sponsored by Karnataka Lalith Kala Academy. He has exhibited his paintings in more than 12 general art exhibitions in Karnataka. His art made a huge impact on the occasion of Chitra Santhe, organized in Bangalore.  


Damodar Acharya has won the Amche Kuncha competition, organized by Shanthi Vana Trust, Dharmasthala, three times. He is also the winner of national-level art competitions held in Hosanagar on the ocassion of the Vishwa Go Sammelana. Acharya is also interested in acting and directing and writes plays.
