Shriyana, 8 yrs, wins state chess championship

Mangaluru, May 26, 2018:  Shriyana Mallya, 8-year-old chess prodigy from Mangaluru, won the Karnataka state-level U-11 girls’ chess championship-2018. This win will make her eligible to represent the state in the U-11 National Chess Championship.

The chess championship was held by the Udupi District Chess Association, Sri Siddhi Vinayaka Chess Academy, Kundapura and United Karnataka Chess Association, at Sri Siddhivinayaka Residential School, Hattiangadi, Karki, Kundapura.The championship was divided in three different age groups of U-7, U-9 and U-11 for boys and girls separately.

She chose to participate in the U-11 category, and won 7 out of 9 rounds, the other 2 rounds were a draw. There were 68 girls participating in this age group. In the U-11 boys category, Siddarth Bhat J of Dakshina Kannada won the title.

Last year, Shriyana had won the bronze medal in the World School Chess Championship, held at Lasi, Romania. She also won another bronze in the Blitz Tournament. Last month, she represented India in the U-8 Asian School Chess Championship, Thailand, and won bronze. She is the daughter of Sandeep and Nandini Mallya from Hoigebazar, Urwa and studies in Lourdes Central School, Bejai.
