Mangalore, May 11, 2012: A Honda Activa scooter skidded near Kulur Bridge on the morning of May 11 Friday and its driver fell into the river and died of drowning.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. According to eyewitnesses, the scooter was moving along KIOCL Road and turned right to prevent a lorry that was going at top speed.

Shrinivas Padhakannayya (26), who was driving the Activa, was thrown off into the river. His wife Swathi, who was riding pillion with him, escaped unhurt.

The Panambur police have registered a case.

A Coast Guard team arrived to retrieve the body of Shrinivas from the river. Rajendra Sapal, Coast Guard officer, said that, owing to the high tide, the rescue operation will take time.
