Rs. 35-crore plan to combat sea erosion

Udupi :   According to a media release issued by the Department of Information Baburao Chinchansur, Minister for Ports, held a meeting with the Ministers and legislators of the three coastal districts at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.  Minister Chinchansur said that all precautionary measures had been taken to prevent loss of life and property due to sea erosion in the three coastal districts.  An emergency action plan of Rs. 35 crore had been drawn up by his ministry to tackle the damage done by sea erosion in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.

A team of officials had been formed to tabulate  information of damage by sea erosion in these districts.  They had been told to submit a report to the ministry. After getting the report, he would meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and seek more grants for checking sea erosion.

The damage due to sea erosion in the three coastal districts taken together so far this year had been estimated at Rs. 35 crore — Rs. 14 crore in Dakshina Kannada district, Rs. 13 crore in Udupi district and Rs. 7 crore in Uttara Kannada district.

A plan is drawn up to construct temporary sea walls to prevent sea erosion at Devbagh, Dandebagh, Mudaga, Manjugani, Harwad, Bhavikeri, Hubbanageri, Gokarn, Gangekulla, Ramanagundi, Honnagadde, Tenginagundi, Talgod, Mavinakurve, Mudalli, Jali and Pavinakurve. Officials had been told to take immediate action in case of sea erosion and respond immediately to problems of people. 

B. Ramanath Rai, Forests and Environment Minister, U.T. Khader, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Sharada Shetty, MLA, Ivan D’Souza, MLC, and senior officers of the Ports Department were present at the meeting.
