Mangalore March 11: The Academic Council of Mangalore University approved a Rs. 3.78-crore deficit budget for the university for 2010-11 at its meeting here on Wednesday.

Reading out the budget proposals, Finance Officer of the university B. Kuppuralingaiah said that the total receipts had been estimated at Rs. 94.8 crore and total expenditure at Rs. 98.58 crore.

He said that under the 11th Plan scheme the university expected a Rs. 4.64-crore grant from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for 2010-11. It has received Rs. 3.13 crore under the Plan for 2009-10.

Mr. Kuppuralingaiah said that the university had proposed constructing residential quarters for women employees of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in Madikeri, Kodagu, a constituent college of Mangalore University.

In addition, it would construct a postgraduate centre at Kushalnagar in Kodagu. The university had also proposed to build a hostel for foreign students on its campus, Mr. Kuppuralingaiah said.

He said that the university would implement the revised UGC pay scales for the lecturers on the university campus and two degree colleges — University College in Mangalore and Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in Madikeri — and pay arrears of 51 months to them during 2010-11.

New colleges: The council also agreed to grant university affiliation to 14 colleges proposed to be started from 2010-11.
