Report reveals endosulfan horror

Mangalore Today News Network

Kasargod, Feb 17: A recently revealed report by the Endosulfan Victims Relief and Remediation Cell, set up by the Kasargod district administration, says that 486 people have died of Endosulfan poisoning since 1995. The report also reveals the ghastly effects of Endosulfan on human beings.

Endosulfan was introduced early in the 80s when T mosquitoes began destroying cashew plantations belonging to the Kerala Cashew Development Board. The Board sprayed Endosulfan, a deadly pesticide, aerially with the help of helicopters. The fumes subsequently poisoned the people who were forced to inhale them. This terrible pesticide has been banned in all countries except India.

The symptoms of Endosulfan poisoning are skeletal disorders, blindness, psycho-somatic and physiological disorders, and babies born with disabilities. People who inhale Endosulfan suffer from dangerous disorders such as cancer, chest infections, skin disorders, birth anomalies, cardiac problems, asthma, kidney and lung disorders, growth disorders, and early deaths.

Initially, people could not figure out why this was happening. A few doctors conducted research on the condition and diagnosed it as poisoning. The district administration gave compensation of Rs 50,000 to every person affected by Endosulfan. A total of 16 villages, including Yenmakaje, Bellur, Muliyar, Kumblaje, Ajanuru, Kayyur, Chimeni, Pulluru, Perya, Pathanadi, Padre, and Saradka, have been poisoned by Endosulfan.

This issue, which has remained hidden for nearly 10 years, has now made headlines.
