RTO is all set to move out of Bangra Kulur

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 04, 2016: The RTO  department from January first week was conducting inspection of heavy vehicles  at Bangra Kulur following which traffic movement on Maidan Road was almost smooth. Transport Department, had got a temporary breather from being accused of creating traffic snarls in the heart of the city, is again in trouble.

As the RTO, regional transport office, Mangaluru, is situated in the heart of Mangaluru, conducting mandatory inspection of heavy vehicles on its premises near A.B. Shetty Circle had been causing traffic gridlock on Maidan Road and surrounding areas.

Unable to shift its operations to the land allotted near Konaje, the department was scouting for some temporary arrangement. DK DC Adoor .B. Ibrahim, who himself had warned the department not to create traffic snarls, had allowed it to utilise 2.5 acres of land at Bangra Kuloor for inspection.  The department had shifted the inspection of heavy vehicles to the new site from January first week following which traffic movement on Maidan Road was improved.  The department had even planned to shift inspection of non-transport vehicles, like cars and motorcycles to this venue.

However, it is learnt that the district administration has allotted the land to another department, following which the Transport Department has to move out.

In-charge Senior Regional Transport Officer G.S. Hegde confirmed the developments and said that the department was scouting for a new place to conduct inspection. It was examining availability of government land around Tannirbavi area and would move as soon as land was finalised.

As the land in Bangra Kuloor was allotted on a temporary basis, the Transport Department had made no arrangements either for the visitors or for its staff at the site.  All of them had to stand in the open, exposed to the sun, and get the work done. Every day, more than one hundred commercial vehicles, including lorries, buses, autorickshaws, mini goods vehicles etc., used to approach the facility, either for new registration or for renewals.
