Udupi, Mar 6: Udupi Pejawar Seer Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji convened a public meeting at the Somanatheshwara Temple in Permude on Friday. The residents of Permude and members of various organizations opposing MSEZ Phase II participated in the meeting. The Swamiji assured them that he would continue to support them.

The Swamiji visited Permude because of certain news reports that criticized him for postponing his fast-unto-death protect against the project for the third time. The Swamiji had initially announced that he would launch his fast-unto-death protest on Nov 11, 2009. He later rescheduled it to Feb 4 and then put it off to March 6.

During the meeting, he assured the people that he has not succumbed to any political pressure as the media alleges. He said that he had postponed the agitation, which should have commenced on March 6, after the chief minister and the home minister assured him that his demands would be considered.

The Swamiji said that he was told that no major decisions could be taken during the assembly. Under these circumstances, he felt that it was not fair to go on fast, he said.

The people gathered at the meeting were agitated when the Swamiji informed them that the Home Minister V S Acharya had told him that most of the notified land was infertile and non-agricultural.

The Swamiji also told that people that the government has assured him that a status quo would be maintained till the taking of a final decision. The Kudubi tribal people responded that MSEZ contractors had attempted to forcibly evict them from them land on Friday evening.
