PWD contractors threaten to go on strike

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 31: The PWD Contractors’ Association of DK and Udupi has threatened to go on a strike because of the PWD’s alleged failure to clear outstanding bills of over Rs 58 crore.
The association has issued a press release in which it states that, if the PWD fails to pay the outstanding bills within a week, its members will stop working on the ongoing development projects and will lay siege on the PWD office.

K Radhakrishna Naik, the vice president of the association, informed journalists on March 30, Wednesday, that the government had unpaid bills of Rs 38 crore in the Mangalore Division and Rs 20 crore in the Udupi Division in 2009 - 10. Payment for work done in 2007 - 08 and 2008 - 09 is also pending, he said.

Mr. Naik also informed that the government has now stopped supplying material and contractors are forced to bear the additional burden of procuring construction material. This makes things very difficult, especially owing to the fluctuating prices of building material, he said.
