Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore , June 22: The forest department and the residents of Nandigudda planted 400 saplings at two cemeteries on Sunday. Range Forest Officer Clifford Lobo said that the department plans to plant 1000 saplings in the cemeteries by Tuesday. He added that Bohemia, Cascia, Tacoma, and Peltophorum saplings along with saplings of mango, teak, and jackfruit have been planted.

The department plans to plant 20,000 saplings within Mangalore city limits by August with the help of the local people, said Vijay Kumar, the deputy conservator of forests in Dakshina Kannada. Half the number will be planted by the forest department and the other half will be given to people who are willing to participate in this drive. This sapling-planting initiative is part of a larger drive to make Mangalore green with the help of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

Kumar said that the department requires participants to fill in application forms before taking away the saplings so that the department can monitor the growth of these plants.
