NMP handles record quantity of 1,710 TEUs

Mangalore, Jun 1, 2012 : Container vessel MV Tiger Mango called at New Mangalore Port on May 28, following which the port handled a record quantity of 1,710 TEUs, the largest number of containers handled from one voyage and far surpassing the port’s earlier record of 1,512 TEUs, which it handled on September 9 last year from the container vessel MV Tampabay.

995 TEUs of the total 1,710 TEUs were imports and 715 TEUs were exports. The major item imported was raw cashew and the major items exported were cashew kernels, coffee, fish products, and candles.

The operator of MV Tiger Mango is M/s Bengal Tiger Lines and the agent is M/s Delta Infralogistics Pvt. Ltd.

NMP Chairman P. Tamilvanan said that the port was growing steadily because of the port management’s proactive marketing efforts and the port infrastructure. The port, which handled only 9,646 TEUs in 2005 – 06, handled 45,009 TEUs in 2011 – 12. In 2012 – 13 so far, the port has handled 7,818 TEUs as against the 7,281 TEUs handled during the same period last year.
