Mother and son accused of dowry harrassment

Mother and son accused of dowry harrassment

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 5: Akshata Kini of Urwa has lodged a complaint at the Urwa police station accusing her husband Roshan Baliga and his mother Roopa Baliga of harassing her for dowry, assaulting her, and threatening to murder her.

In her complaint, Akshata said that they had a registered marriage on Jan 9, 2008 and were later married traditionally in April 2008 at T V Raman Pai Hall. The dowry harrassment began after Akshata moved into her in-laws house in June 2008. Her husband requested her to give her valuables to his uncle’s children. He turned hostile and began harassing her when she refused. Even his mother joined in and threatened that she would get her son married again. Family mediation did not put an end to the harrassment, said Akshata in her complaint.

On Jan 16, Roopa and Roshan asked Akshata to get money from her parents; and when she refused, they assaulted her and threatened that they would kill her. She had to take treatment at the Unity Hospital.

The accused made a bail plea before the court, which was rejected. They are currently absconding and the police have launched a manhunt for the two. The police are now collecting evidence against the duo and are planning to make an arrest under the Dowry Prohibition Act as soon as they have obtained sufficient evidence.
