Mangaluru KSRTC division to get 20 Volvo sleeper buses

Mangaluru KSRTC division to get 20 Volvo sleeper buses

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, August 12, 2018: Transport Minister D C Thamanna stated that 20 new hi-tech Volvo and sleeper buses will be sanctioned to Mangaluru division.

Speaking to media during his visit to Udupi, he said that to ensure safe long journeys, the Volvo and sleeper buses will be procured despite incurring a huge expenditure on the same. All the old buses will be stopped.

He added although the department is running under a Rs 600 crore loss, the department has no objections for bearing 25% of the expenses for the student bus passes. However, the government should bear 50% of the expense, which is not possible owing to the burden incurred following the waiving of farm loans in the state.

The work on the construction of new bus stop for JnNURM buses in Udupi will be completed in another six to seven months. The bus stop will also accommodate commercial complexes. Depending on the need, floors will be added to the building.

He said that the parking space has been provided at the cellar. The ground and first floor will be exclusively for commercial outlets.

Responding to a query over massive irregularities at RTO offices, the minister said that the staff crunch is the main cause. Around 460 RTO and traffic posts, and 139 break inspectors’ posts are pending at various level in the Supreme Court and KPSC respectively, owing to disputes.

The government has decided to make some arrangements for the appointments. The online system is introduced to check corruption. New offices for both RTO and ARTO, for the time being, will not be allotted unless all vacant posts are filled.

He instructed officials to immediately start the construction of the bus stop at Yedthare in Byndoor. The Rs 5 crore project will also accommodate various government offices on the top as there is an acute shortage of land in Byndoor to build the various department offices.

Byndoor is announced as the new taluk and there is a need for all government offices to be set up in the area. The measure will help income generation for KSRTC, he added.

The minister said that he has spoken with the officials over the cancellation of licences for the government buses in rural areas in Byndoor.

He said wherever the transport system is nationalised, the government has introduced buses, however, the government is not keen to disturb the supremacy of the private sector in the transport system in this part of the region as they have been serving for years.
