Mangalore – a work paradise for out-of-state labourers

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangale, May 11, 2012 : Mangalore is turning out to be a paradise for daily wage earners from Jharkhand, Bihar, and Orissa because they can earn Rs. 200 per day in DK against the Rs. 50 per day they can earn in their own hometowns.

Since MSEZ requires a number of contract workers, it employs the largest number of workers from Bihar, Orissa, and Jharkhand. The contract company takes the workers to the work site in vehicles reserved for the purpose and then takes them back to rooms arranged for them. Workers from Bihar, Orissa, and Jharkhand are known for their dedication and hard work. They hardly take leave from work.

Some of these workers are also from places such as Uttaranchal, Punjab, North Karnataka, and other places.

According to Yadhu Rao Bosle of Jharkand, Mangalore is a real paradise for workers. He said that he would get free meals and a wage of Rs. 50 per day in his hometown, which isn’t sufficient to run the house. However, if he works as a contract worker in Mangalore, he would get a minimum wage of Rs. 200 and sometimes he could even earn Rs. 300 – Rs. 400. Besides, the company arranges food and accommodation for the workers, he added. Stating that he hardly needs to spend his salary, he said that he has a lot of money to take home.

Sharing his life story, Ramparwesh, another worker, said that he had 6 acres of land in his village and made enough money as an agriculturist, but the government acquired his land for a construction company and he found himself unemployed. He said that he is happy with his work in Mangalore and is earning well.

These workers are experts in civil work such as painting, laying floor titles, digging, leveling, and so on. When they are put to work in a team, they finish the assigned work in no time. Although given a weekly day off work, they arrive at the work site promptly and work for sometime. Some of them even work in hotels around Suratkal.
