Mangalore University to confer honorary doctorates on seven eminent personalities

Mangalore, Apr 4: The Mangalore University will confer honorary doctorates on 7 persons during its 28th annual convocation, which will be held on the campus of the university on April 6, informed Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, at a press conference held at University College on Saturday. 

The selected seven are Dr. Rakesh Kumar Bhandari, the director of Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, at Bidhan Nagar, Calcutta (nuclear scientist); Dr. M Mohan Alva, the chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodubidri (educationist, promoter of sports and culture); A S Vishnu Bharat, chartered accountant, Vishnu Bharat and Co., Bangalore (social service); Madhura M Chatrapathy, trustee and director, Asian Centre for Entrepreneurial Initiatives, Bangalore (social worker); Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes (social service); Kolyur Ramachandra Rao, Udupi (artist); and R Chenraj Jain, chairman of the Jain Group of Institutions, Bangalore (educationist, social worker, and philanthropist). While D.Sc (Honoris Causa) will be conferred on Dr. Bhandari, D. Litt (Honoris Causa) will be conferred on the others. 

Prof Murthy also said that the university will confer a Doctor of Science (DSc) in materials science and 62 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees (14 in arts, 40 in science, and 8 in commerce). The university will award 30 gold medals and 56 cash prizes and 70 ranks. 

Dr. Shashi Tharoor, the union minister of state for external affairs, will be the chief guest. Pro Chancellor and Higher Education Minister Aravinda Limbavali will be present; and Governor H R Bharadwaj will preside over the programme. 

Mangalore University Registrar (administration) Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, Registrar (evaluation) Prof P S Yedapadithaya, Science Faculty Dean Prof K K Achary, and University College Principal Lakshminarayan Bhatta were present among others.
