Man sentenced to three years imprisonment for circulating counterfeit notes

Mangaluru, June 2, 2015 : Principal District and Sessions Judge Uma M.G. on Monday sentenced Jaison P. (34) of Bantwal to three years imprisonment on finding him guilty of possessing and distributing counterfeit notes of Rs. 100 denomination.

The case relates to the one registered in Bajpe police station by Chandrahas, a shopkeeper, in Paduperar. According to the complaint, Jaison gave Chandrahas Rs. 100 currency note after purchasing two mobile recharge cards (Rs. 10 each). After giving him the change, Chandrahas noticed that the currency note given by Jaison was counterfeit.

Chandrahas managed to trace Jaison and hand him over to police. The then Police Inspector Ananta Murudeshwar investigated the case and found Jaison to have given similar counterfeit notes at six other places in the area. The police raided Jaison’s room in a building near Bajpe bus stand and seized six counterfeit currency notes. They also seized a colour copying machine and other articles used by Jaison to produce counterfeit notes.

Prosecutor Pushparaj Adhyantaya examined witnesses, including an expert who examined the counterfeit notes recovered from Jaison. The judge convicted Jaison under Sections 489 (c) (possession of counterfeit currency notes) and 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code. The Judge has also imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 on Jaison. In default, Jaison has to under go a further imprisonment of three months, the Judge said.
