Mangalore, May 5, 2012 : A 30-year-old labourer died after he fell from the seventh floor of the hospital building on May 4, Friday.

Shivamani Vittal (30), a native of Bagalkot and a resident of Lingappaiah Colony in Mulky, had come to the A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences along with his wife, who was being treated for a complication related to her pregnancy. The two had come to the hospital four days ago. According to hospital authorities, Vittal approached a psychiatrist of the hospital on Thursday and sought treatment for a psychiatric aliment. The doctor had asked him to come with a family member and get admitted for treatment on Friday.

It is said that on Friday morning, after having breakfast with his wife in the general ward located on the second floor of the institute’s building, Vittal went to sixth floor and was found chatting with a few workers who were engaged in construction work at the sixth and seventh floor of the building at around 10am. Then he is said to have jumped from the seventh floor when the workers had proceeded for tea to a stall outside the institute. Those doing the painting work on the building in front of the institute’s building were witness to Vittal’s act. The hospital authorities said Vittal succumbed to severe head and leg injuries.
