MCI dissolution leads to decline in medical seats

MCI dissolution leads to decline in medical seats

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 10:  The dissolution of the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the move to re-inspect colleges that were approved in April 2010 has led to a decline in the number of medical seats in the state this year.

The state has withdrawn recognition granted to around 5 medical colleges, including 3 government colleges in Shimoga, Bidar, and Raichur as well as KIMS Hubli and SS Institute of Medical Science and Research, which were approved after the inspection by the now-dissolved MCI. Approvals granted to 85 colleges in India have been repealed and colleges are now being re-inspected by a freshly-constituted MCI governing body.

Around 763 dental seats and 1,339 medical seats will be on offer on Thursday. Yenepoya Medical College and K. S. Hegde Medical College, two deemed-to-be institutions in Mangalore, have withdrawn from the CET process and no longer admit students under the subsidized government quota. The government has decided not to admit students to Ambedkar Medical College (AMC) of Bangalore for the fifth year in a row. Currently, the AMC case is in court.

The move will lead to a number of complications. Many students will find that the private college admission process conducted by COMED-K will clash with their second round of admission in July. A Karnataka Examinations Authority official said that this will complicate matters because students will find it difficult to make the right choice and might prefer to wait for the second round of admission.

The Directorate of Medical Education has written to the Union Government regarding the situation. The government colleges will be inspected on June 11. The new inspection team comprises academics from St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences in Bangalore, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Christian Medical College of Vellore, and JIPMER in Puducherry.
