MCC will take steps to prevent artificial flooding: Dr. Vijayaprakash

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Apr 14: Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that the civic body will take all the required steps to prevent artificial flooding of the city during monsoons.

The MLA, the mayor, and the standing committee members of the MCC visited the areas between Kottara to Gujjarakere to study condition of storm water drains there. The commissioner said that temporary drains will be constructed to prevent flooding during the monsoons.

In several areas, people have thrown plastic covers into the drains, which might block the drains during the monsoons and create artificial floods. The commissioner said that health and engineering section officials will be appointed to clean the drains. He said that the problem of artificial flooding wouldn’t have arisen if the work on drains and footpaths was done alone with concretization.

Dr. Vijayaprakash said that tenders have already been called for the construction of 11 major drains and footpaths within the city limits at an estimated cost of Rs 4.6 crore. An estimate is also being prepared for constructing 23kms of footpath and drains in the city. The tender will be invited once the government grant is obtained, said the commissioner.
