Lovers attempt to commit suicide at Pilikula

Mangalore, Mar 10: A couple attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the deep pond at Pilikula Nisargadhama on March 9, Tuesday. The young man died of drowning, but the girl was saved and admitted to the local hospital. 

The young man who lost his life was Santhosh Mathias (28), a resident of Sooralpady near Ganjimutt, employed as an electrical contractor. The girl was Anisha D’Silva (22), a resident of Shaktinagar. 

Visitors who saw the lovers struggling in the pond shouted for help. Local swimmers attempted to save the youngsters. Unfortunately, only Anisha could be saved while Santhosh floated out of reach. The pond, which the lovers chose to commit suicide, is deep and is used only for boating. 

An eyewitness said that the lovers had arrived at the park nearly an hour before their suicide attempt and were sitting on a bench. 

Santhosh’s family members confirmed that the two were lovers who were planning to get married. The two families had no objection to their marriage. As far as the families knew, the two had not quarreled. Moreover, the lovers had visited Attur Church to seek blessings.
