Local folklore needs closer research

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru Feb 12, 2018: B.A. Vivek Rai, scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Hampi Kannada University, recently stressed the need for a kind of empathetic research with regard to folklore.

“Mere scholarship will not help much. The researcher should also consider himself/herself as an insider,” he said.

Inaugurating a State-level seminar on folkoristics, Prof. Rai said: “Grand theories also may not help much in folklore research. What is necessary, is some kind of empathy and belongingness with the people right there.”

Maintaining that India lived in many centuries simultaneously, Prof. Rai said it was also unique about India as many countries had lost their folklore, but it was still alive in India. “That memory needs to be preserved. Folklore also upholds the pluralistic tradition and hence it is important,” he said.

About 20 papers were presented during the seminar.
